Sweden Holds Auction of 349 Previously Blocked .SE Domains

Sweden is auctioning 349 previously blocked .SE domain names. The auction features 349 .SE domains and will run for 10-13 days.
All 349 .SE domain names have been blocked since 2003. The auction started Monday, October 13,2014 and will run 10-12 days .Each domain name has a starting price of 1 krona. Both individuals and companies will be able to acquire a .SE domain name.
According to SwedishWire.com, the domain names are being auctioned off in batches on Tradera.

ISNIC suspends .IS Domain Linked To Islamic State Website

The .is (Iceland) registry ISNIC has suspended a domain name due to being linked with the terrorist organisation Islamic State.
The khilafah.is domain was suspended yesterday as it was used “for the website of a known terrorist organisation. The majority of ISNIC’s board made the decision … on the grounds of Article 9 of ISNIC’s Rules on Domain Registration, which states: ‘The registrant is responsible for ensuring that the use of the domain is within the limits of Icelandic law as current at any time.'”
Never before, the registry notes, has ISNIC suspended a domain on grounds of a website’s content.
ISNIC head Jens Petur Jensen told Iceland’s media that this was the first time they had suspended a domain because of its content.
“We have no experience with this… we have always pointed out that it’s none of our business. That the Islamic State had their domain under ‘.is’ was something we feared because of the abbreviation,” Jensen said.
According to New Zealand’s Stuff website “documentation for the web listing shows it was registered to Suite 4551, 17B Farnham St, Parnell, Auckland. Its owner is described as Azym Abdullah.”
“On the New Zealand Companies Office listings, the suite is the registered office for at least 63 companies, including a number that have been struck off.
“Under New Zealand’s company system, registration can be done online with virtual offices providing a legal entity for mail drops.
“It is not the first time New Zealand virtual offices and shell companies have been caught up in international security.”

Be Careful What You Click: Alert of New Fraudulent Domain Renewal Emails

Phishing is a type of email scam that cybercriminals use to steal credit card or personal identifying information. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reported that 125,215 attacks occurred [PDF 1.28 MB] in January through March of this year alone, which reminds us to be suspicious of “too good to be true” offers you receive in email, even if they appear to come from places you interact with or trust,including ICANN.
Recently, online scammers have targeted domain name registrants with a registration renewal scam in order to fraudulently obtain financial information. The scam unfolds as follows. The scammer sends an email to a domain registrant that offers an opportunity to renew a registration, and encourages the email recipient to “click here” to renew online at attractively low rates. These emails appear to be sent byICANN. The scammers even lift ICANN’s branding and logo and include these in both the body of the email message and at the fake renewal web page, where the scammers will collect any credit card or personal information that victims of the scam submit.
Phishing attacks frequently employ the use of familiar imagery, visuals and language associated with well-known brands in order to trick recipients into believing they come from a valid source. In recent years, scammers have grown especially adept at mimicking real communications, so it’s especially important that registrants take note of any suspicious or unsolicited emails coming from ICANN.
The security of our community remains one of our key priorities. While ICANN is actively investigating these scams, we recommend that registrants also take steps to protect their personal information. If you receive an email similar to the one described above, follow these steps:
Be suspicious of any email that offers domain renewal services from ICANN.
As a reminder, ICANN does not process domain registrations or collect fees from registrants directly. All fee collections are transactions between the registrar and the registrant.
Report any scams to ICANN immediately via an email to Contractual Compliance at compliance@icann.org. Where possible, please provide a copy of the suspicious email.
Contact your sponsoring registrar directly for any concerns about the status of your domain name.
While cybercriminals are always looking to exploit people’s good intentions, it serves as a reminder to always use email security best practices. If you think an email is suspicious, always avoid clicking on any links in the message.

Threatpost: Researchers Work At Predicting Malicious Domains

“A typical phishing or Web-based malware attack usually isn’t terribly complex,” says a report on Threat Post. “But they need a few things in order to work, and one of the key components often is a malicious domain. Researchers spend a lot of time identifying and taking these domains down, but some researchers now are trying to stay a step ahead of the game by predicting which domains will be used for malicious purposes.”
According to the report, “Like bored tweens at the mall, malicious domains tend to cluster together, showing up in large groups at certain hosting providers. Often, these are so-called bulletproof hosting companies that aren’t overly concerned with what kind of activity is emanating from the domains on its platform.”
Dozens of domains are often registered at a time, “typically with nonsensical alphanumeric URLs, and use them as needed, discarding them whenever they’re identified as malicious.”
To counter these attackers, researchers at Palo Alto Networks have been looking at their behaviours. And as a result they have “identified a few things that can help them predict which domains may end up being malicious at some point. They found that one domains are identified as malicious and blacklisted by reputation services, the attackers will abandon them. Then, after a period of time, the domain is removed from the reputation systems and other blacklists and will fall back into a pool of domains that are useful to attackers. In research presented at the Virus Bulletin conference here Wednesday, Wei Xu, Yanxin Zhang and Kyle Sanders of Palo Alto said that they have developed a formula that enables them to predict which of those domains will be used by attackers again.”

Putin discusses plan to disconnect Russia from global internet in case of emergency

Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering a plan that would disconnect Russia from the global internet in the case of an “emergency” in Russia.
The Security Council in Russia convened yesterday to discuss plans for what might happen in such an emergency. The goal, according to the Vedomosti newspaper, would be to bring sovereignty to the Russian internet. Top level domain .RU might also come under state control, although the Kremlin would have to face ICANN first.
If the plans came to action, it would be a radical turn of events. Russian Internet has remained open and relatively unrestricted compared to Russian television and newspapers.
Russia believes the majority of Western media outlets have adopted a biased view toward events in the Ukraine, hence the Kremlin’s desire to distance itself from differing opinions in the outside world. Russian media channels are portraying the Ukrainian conflict as a battle against “fascists,” and continue to deny the use of weapons and soldiers in the region.
Russian officials have talked at length about concerns of US influence and spying. According to Vedomosti, they aim for a reduction in the amount of dependency on American technology and digital infrastructure. Andrei Soldatov, a Russian spy agencies expert, is calling the move a “real step forward in the development of a besieged fortress mentality.” He added that it would be possible for Russia to complete a total disconnect, because the country has “surprisingly few” public Internet Exchange Points. In regards to potential Russian takeover of .RU, .SU (Soviet Union) and рф (Russian Federation), he said that many of these websites are hosted abroad. Even his own website hosted in Germany would be affected. This makes the move seem all the more ominous.
We believe Russia may be concerned that Western countries will impose internet-based sanctions and is exploring ways to minimize the potential impact. Unplugging from the internet would not seem to address that concern.

Dublin To Host ICANN’s 54th Public Meeting

ICANN has formally announced that Dublin will be the host for the 54th ICANN meeting taking place in October 2015.
Dublin has previously played host to both RIPE and IETF meetings. It is also the venue for Web Summit (now known as The Summit), which will be held on November 4th-6th 2014 and which attracts several thousand attendees.
A growing number of domain registries are based in Ireland’s capital city. While some might be using Ireland’s tax regime, others have setup significant operations in the city.
At present there are the following companies:
Afilias, based in the centre of the city at the IFSC. Afilias have had an Irish corporate entity for years, but only started staffing their Dublin offices after their acquisition of .mobi and GoMobi
IEDR, the company that runs Ireland’s ccTLD.

Owner of CountryGirlStore.com guilty of reverse domain name hijacking

LML Investments, owner of Country Girl branded clothing sold at CountryGirlStore.com, has been admonished by a panel for abusing the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).
The company filed a cybersquatting complaint against PA Gordon, owner of CountryGirl.com. The case was filed despite Gordon having owned the domain name since well before LML Investments claims any trademark rights in the “Country Girl” mark.
A three person National Arbitration Forum panel determined that LML Investments did not make even a prima facie case in support of its arguments that Gordon lacked rights and legitimate interests in the domain name. It was also unable to prove he registered the domain in bad faith, given that he registered it before the trademark rights.
The panel wrote:
The Panel finds that Complainant and its counsel have acted inappropriately and in reverse domain name hijacking by initiating this dispute and continuing with it following the delivery of the Response by Respondent. Complainant is attempting to deprive Respondent, the rightful, registered holder of the disputed domain name, of its rights to use the disputed domain name. Complainant and its counsel should have known that they would be unable to prove at least two of the elements needed to prevail. Even a cursory review of the URDP and UDRP decisions would have alerted Complainant and its counsel to the fact that its case was devoid of merit.
