Hungary is a parliamentary republic in Eastern Europe. It is a member of the EU, NATO and OECD; it is a landlocked country, bordered to the north by Slovakia, to the north east by Ukraine, to the east by Romania, to the south by Serbia and Croatia and to the west by Slovenia and Austria. It is divided into 19 administrative provinces, with one autonomous district of Budapest.

Hungary covers a total area of 93,030 km² and is predominantly flat, divided down the middle by the River Danube, whose 2,860 km make it one of the longest rivers in Europe. To the west of the river lies the region of Transdanubia; to the east, the Great Hungarian Plain. Mountain ranges are found in the north, with the Transdanubian Mountains and the Carpathian North Hungarian Mountains.

The total population numbers 9,983,645, according to 2012 estimates, the majority Hungarian; there are various ethnic minorities, including Roma, German, Slovakian and Croat. The official language is Hungarian, though a second language is learned from primary school age (English or German). The capital is Budapest, a city of significant historical and cultural value.

The post-communist economy depends mostly on agriculture (legumes, grain, fruit, vegetables, tobacco), livestock farming (horses, cattle, sheep), as well as manufacturing industries (mechanical, pharmaceutical, chemical) and the various natural resources (oil, natural gas, brown coal, bauxite, coal, manganese, uranium).

The local currency is the Forint.
