Ivory Coast, officially the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire is a presidential republic in East Africa. It is bordered by Liberia and Guinea to the west, Mali and Burkina Faso to the north, Ghana to the east and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. It is divided into 19 administrative regions and 81 departments.

It covers a total area of 322,460 km², with a population of 19,737,800. The country’s landscape consists of several geographically distinct areas: the western coast is characterised by cliffs, bays and rocky headlands, whilst the eastern side contains inland lagoons; the hinterland is rich with thick, tropical vegetation in the form of rainforests. The capital is Yamoussoukro and the local currency is the CFA Franc.

The country’s economy is based on the production and export of coffee, cocoa beans, palm oil (in which it is the world’s biggest exporter), bananas and pineapples. It is also a big exporter of fish (tuna), diamonds, manganese, gold and nickel. The official language is French.
