Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a landlocked presidential republic in Central Asia. It is bordered to the north and west by Kazakhstan, to the east by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and to the south by Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Formerly part of the Soviet Republic, it has been independent since its dissolution in 1991, and is divided into twelve administrative provinces, one autonomous republic and one independent city.

It covers a total area of 447,400 km² and has a population of 27,444,702, according to 2012 estimates. The territory consists of plains and steppes in central western areas; in the south east, there are high mountains, giving rise to vast glaciers. The most fertile areas are found in the Fergana Valley.
The capital is Tashkent and the local currency is the Uzbekistan Som.

The local economy is based on the production of cotton, fruit and rice; natural resources are also of great importance, including gold, coal, oil and uranium, as well as timber exports.

The official languages of Uzbekistan are Uzbek and Russian.
